A computer that stops responding halfway through an email, video call or piece of coursework is more than an annoyance. Computer freezing causes can be as simple as one demanding program using all available memory, or as serious as a failing drive that puts your files at risk. The key is to notice the pattern before a small interruption becomes a complete loss of access.
A freeze is not always the same thing as a slow computer. If the mouse still moves but one program will not respond, the issue may be limited to that application. If the screen locks, the keyboard does nothing and the computer needs to be switched off at the mains or by holding the power button, there may be a wider software or hardware fault.

Too many programs competing for resources
Every open browser tab, background app and start-up program uses part of your computer's processor, memory and storage. Older machines with limited RAM can struggle when several demanding jobs happen at once, such as a video call, dozens of browser tabs, photo editing and a large download.
This does not automatically mean the computer needs replacing. Closing unused programs, reducing the number of apps that start with Windows and keeping enough free space on the main drive can make a noticeable difference. Dust in fans and vents, dried thermal paste, a failing fan or using a laptop on a duvet can trap heat inside the machine. When temperatures rise too far, the computer may slow down, freeze or switch itself off to protect its components.
A laptop that is hot underneath, unusually noisy or prone to freezing during games, video editing or long meetings deserves attention. Place it on a hard, flat surface and make sure the vents are clear. Freezing that starts immediately after a Windows update, new program installation or graphics driver update often points to software rather than failed hardware. Drivers allow Windows to communicate with components such as the display, Wi-Fi card, printer and graphics chip. The wrong, outdated or corrupted driver can cause instability.
Do not install driver-updater tools at random. They can add unwanted software or install versions that are not right for your device. It is safer to identify what changed around the time the freezing began, remove a recent troublesome program if appropriate, and use the computer maker's recommended updates.
Some updates do fix important reliability and security issues, so avoiding every update is not a long-term answer. The sensible approach is to keep the system maintained, allow time for major updates to finish, and investigate if a clear change in behaviour follows one.
Failing memory or internal components
Random freezes are sometimes caused by RAM, the temporary memory your computer uses while running. Faulty RAM can lead to programs closing unexpectedly, blue-screen errors, failed starts and freezes that seem to happen for no obvious reason.
Other possible hardware causes include a weakening power supply in a desktop PC, a damaged charging port or battery in a laptop, a failing graphics card, or a loose internal connection after a knock or drop. These faults need diagnosis rather than guesswork, because their symptoms can overlap.
For example, a freeze during a game could be caused by overheating, a graphics driver, inadequate RAM or a graphics card fault. Malware and unwanted background software
Malware is not the most common explanation for every frozen computer, but it should not be ruled out. Run a reputable security scan and remove software you do not recognise with care. What to do when your computer freezes
First, wait a minute or two if a large file is opening, an update is installing or a program is clearly working. Clicking repeatedly can add more commands to the queue and make the situation look worse.
If only one program has stopped responding, use Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager in Windows. You may be able to close the affected program without restarting the whole computer. Any unsaved work in that program may be lost, but other files should remain open.
If the entire computer is unresponsive, hold the power button down until it turns off, wait a few seconds, then restart it. This should be a last resort rather than a regular fix. Once it starts again, note what you were doing, whether any error appeared and how often the issue occurs. Those details make diagnosis much faster.
Avoid repeatedly switching the power off during a Windows update. If the screen shows a message that updates are being configured, give it time unless there is clear evidence that the machine has been stuck for an unusually long period.
When freezing needs a proper repair check
Occasional freezing after an overloaded browser session may be manageable. Freezing every day, during start-up, while accessing files or when the computer is cool and lightly used is different.
