A laptop that suddenly feels too hot to rest on your knees is not always broken. Video calls, games, photo editing and charging all create heat. Blocked vents and built-up dust

This is especially common in laptops used on carpet, bedding or sofas. Soft surfaces can cover the underside vents completely, leaving the laptop to recirculate its own hot air. Even a clean-looking device can have a significant layer of dust inside after a few years of daily use.

Demanding programmes and background activity
Not every heat issue is a hardware fault. Modern laptops can run warm while exporting video, playing a game, compiling code or handling a large spreadsheet. A browser with many tabs open, especially tabs playing video or running web apps, can also put sustained pressure on the processor.
Background tasks matter too. Operating system updates, cloud file syncing, antivirus scans and indexing can make a laptop work harder shortly after it is switched on. Poor placement and a warm room
Where you use the laptop makes a genuine difference. Sitting it on a hard, flat surface keeps the underside clear and gives heat somewhere to go. Using it on a duvet may feel comfortable, but it can trap heat within minutes.
Ambient temperature also matters. A laptop used beside a radiator, in direct sunlight or in a stuffy room has less cool air available for its cooling system. During hot weather, a device that was usually fine may start throttling performance or shutting down because it has less room to manage temperature safely.

Battery or charging problems
Batteries naturally warm a little while charging, particularly during fast charging or heavy use. Excessive heat around the battery area, a bulging case, a lifting trackpad or a screen that no longer sits flush are different matters. These can be warning signs of a swollen battery.
Stop using and charging a laptop if you suspect battery swelling. Do not press the casing back into place or try to puncture the battery. A swollen battery should be assessed and replaced by a technician as soon as possible.
